Corporate Social Responsibility at OLN
- What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)?
Corporate Social Responsibility is a relatively old concept, but its impact has exploded over the past decade. It involves businesses embracing responsibility for its actions and encourages its employees to actively participate to improve and build their communities, to which they are a member.
- Why is it important?
It is important because businesses should be making an impact to help others. It is important because we all live in the same Community, but by everyone giving something a little back, it enriches us as human beings – it’s that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you do something without someone asking!
- How does OLN approach CSR?
OLN takes its CSR role very seriously, especially as a corporate citizen in Hong Kong and we actively encourage all of our staff to participate across a wide range of community projects. We strive to make a real difference in the Community we live and work in, whether it be charity work or acting as mentors for under privileged children.
- Who gets involved and what kind of CSR activities does OLN do?
Who gets involved in our CSR at OLN is entirely up to the individual staff member as to whether or not they wish to participate. Fortunately, we have been (and hope to continue!) lucky that most of our staff consistently volunteer to participate in our CSR activities.
Here are just some of the things we do at OLN…
Child Welfare Scheme
One ongoing project which OLN has favoured is the Child Welfare Scheme (http://www.cwshk.org/). For years, Gordon Oldham and Chris Hooley have participated in various events, with Gordon in “Racing the Planet” and Chris Hooley in various mountain bike events, specifically to raise money for CWS. Others involved from OLN include Vera Sung and Adam Hugill who have also participated and raised money not only for CWS but also for the Action Asia Foundation.

Action Asia Foundation
Another project OLN actively supports is the Action Asia Foundation (http://www.actionasiaevents.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=15&Itemid=18). Our recent involvement was sponsoring a charity kayaking day at the Gold Coast in Hong Kong. The children were from Camp Quality, a children’s cancer charity.

Free Will!
In September 2011, we launched were the first business in Hong Kong to launch the concept of “Free Will” (http://www.oln-law.com/index.php/zh/component/k2/item/67-freewill). This involved free legal service from OLN to those who required a will to be prepared with a suitable charity donation to CWS as the nominated charity. It was a huge success and we are keen to replicate this with other charities in 2012 and beyond!
Community Business
As at the end of 2011, OLN signed up to Community Business (http://www.communitybusiness.org/welcome.htm), a non-profit organisation which endeavours to help companies build stronger and practical relationships with the community in Hong Kong. We consistently strive to be the best at our CSR policy and we are committed to endeavours which promotes socially responsibility and environmentally friendly business practices, equal opportunities, work place diversity and opportunities for our employees in the community in which we live and work. We provide support and encourage staff involvement in a variety of different community projects and will continue to do so.
